A well-maintained batch weighing system delivers consistent accuracy, uninterrupted uptime, and audit-ready calibration records. Here is a complete maintenance schedule — daily through annual — for Gomaplast GMI operators and maintenance teams.

Why Maintenance Matters More for Weighing Systems Than Most Equipment

A weighing and dosing system occupies a unique position in your production process: it is both a precision measurement instrument and an industrial handling machine. Both aspects require maintenance attention — and the consequences of neglecting either are serious.

On the measurement side, a load cell that has drifted by 0.5% doesn't announce itself. The scale still displays a reading. The system still logs a weight. But the data is wrong — and downstream, that means batches that appear to be within tolerance are not. The resulting compound inconsistency shows up as unexplained process variation, wider quality spread, and occasional failures that can't be traced to an obvious cause.

On the mechanical side, a carousel with a worn bearing, a bin lock mechanism that's binding, or an RFID reader with contaminated antenna surface creates workflow disruptions, false errors, and — if allowed to progress — production downtime.

A consistent maintenance program prevents both failure modes before they affect production quality or uptime.

Scale Calibration: The Most Critical Maintenance Task

The load cell and scale platform are the core of the batch weighing system. All accuracy guarantees depend on the scale being correctly calibrated and mechanically sound.

Daily zero check: Before each shift, verify the scale reads zero with an empty platform. A non-zero reading indicates contamination, mechanical binding, or drift — all of which require investigation before production starts.

Weekly span check: Use NIST-traceable reference weights to verify the scale reads correctly at the mid-point and top-end of the working range. Document the results. If span error exceeds ±0.2%, recalibrate immediately.

Load cell inspection: Inspect the load cell body and mounting hardware for mechanical damage, corrosion, or chemical contact. Many rubber and silicone compounding chemicals are aggressive — ensure the load cell is adequately protected and that spillage is cleaned immediately.

Annual recertification: Annual calibration by a qualified metrology service, with a calibration certificate retained in your quality system, is required for GMP, ISO 9001, and IATF 16949 compliance. Schedule this as a planned event, not a reaction to a quality problem.

RFID and Barcode System Maintenance

RFID and barcode verification are your primary defenses against ingredient mix-ups — the error category with the most severe quality consequences. Maintaining these systems in good working order is not optional.

RFID card hygiene: Operator, bin, and bucket RFID cards accumulate chemical contamination in compounding environments. Clean cards periodically with a dry cloth. Inspect for physical damage (cracks, delamination). Test read range monthly — a card that reads at 3 cm instead of 10 cm is functionally degraded and should be replaced.

RFID reader antenna: Clean antenna surfaces regularly. Chemical deposits, particularly silicone release agents and carbon black dust, can attenuate signal strength. If the system begins generating false "card not found" errors that resolve on retry, antenna contamination or detuning is the likely cause.

Barcode scanner: Clean the scanner window daily. A smudged or scratched scanner window causes read failures that slow workflow and create operator frustration — leading to verification shortcuts. Replace scratched scanner windows promptly.

Bin lock mechanism: RFID-controlled bin locks experience repeated mechanical cycling. Inspect locking pins and receiver slots monthly for wear, deformation, or contamination. Lubricate per Gomaplast specifications — do not use petroleum lubricants in silicone processing environments.
